The History of Valley Eye

Our practice began South Central Ophthalmology as a solo practice in December of 1989 by its founder and president, G. Michael Taft, D.O. Dr. Taft purposely did not include his name in the practice name in anticipation of future growth and his desire to honor subsequent partners’ integrity. His dream was to create a Vertically Integrated Eye Care Delivery System with clinical, surgical, optical, and educational services. The desire to create a Center of Excellence in Eye Care has been lovingly built since 1989. In 1991 South Central Ophthalmology was incorporated as a medical professional corporation in the state of Alabama.

Rapid growth proceeded undoubtedly from the beginning of the practice. Four expansions of the present facility at 201 Rosa Lane were made in the first eight years. In 1997, Optometric and Optical services were added and Michael O. Stutts, O.D. joined the practice. Three other additions were made at the same time. A second clinical office was opened in Muscle Shoals, AL.  Optical services started at both locations and the name of the practice was changed to Valley Eye. In 2003, Kathryn E. Phillips, O.D. joined the practice.

The optical department, Eye South Quality Eyewear, includes an optical dispensary and an optical finishing laboratory at both locations. The practice was renamed for the “three O’s”, Optician, Optometry, and Ophthalmology. To keep a regional name the term “Valley” was substituted for “South Central.” This is appropriate for the tri-state region (Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama) which is dominated geographically by the Tennessee River Valley and its tributaries.

Dr. Taft was awarded the “Certificate of Need” (CON) in 1997 to construct an Ambulatory Surgery CenterValley Surgery Center, LLC opened on December 22, 1999 to provide surgery for all of North Alabama and the surrounding areas.  Using the latest technology, Dr. Taft believes that we should always serve others out of love and thanksgiving to God.  Valley Eye and Valley Surgery Center’s Vision, Mission, and Goals are clearly stated and are in direct alignment with our motto:
